Day 1 – Arrive Kigali

Arrive in Kigali, Rwanda’s clean, hilly capital. Settle in, and if time allows, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial for a sobering but essential piece of context before the safari begins. Overnight in Kigali.

Lodge options: Ubumwe Grande Hotel or The Retreat by Heaven — both comfortable, well-located upper-midrange choices in the city.

Day 2 – Kigali to Nyungwe Forest National Park

An early departure (roughly 5–6 hours by road) takes you south through Rwanda’s terraced hills to Nyungwe, one of Africa’s oldest montane rainforests. En route, consider a stop at the Ethnographic Museum in Huye (Butare) for a cultural detour. Arrive in the afternoon and settle into your forest-edge lodge.

Upper-midrange lodge options: Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel is a solid midrange option along the transfer route to Nyungwe, prized for its sweeping views over the forest, tea plantations, and Lake Kivu. Alternatively, Gisakura Guesthouse offers simpler comfort closer to the park entrance.

Day 3 – Chimpanzee Trekking & Canopy Walk, Nyungwe

Rise before dawn for chimpanzee tracking — Nyungwe is home to over 500 chimpanzees among its 13 primate species. In the afternoon, do the famous Nyungwe canopy walk, a suspended bridge offering dramatic views over the forest canopy. Overnight at the same lodge.

*If your budget stretches slightly higher, Nyungwe Forest Lodge — set on a working tea plantation at the park’s edge — is worth the splurge, with its restaurant, bar, spa, and pool, though it sits closer to the luxury end of the spectrum.

Day 4 – Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

Drive north (about 4–5 hours) through Rwanda’s “land of a thousand hills” toward Musanze (Ruhengeri), gateway to Volcanoes National Park, home to roughly half the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Settle into your lodge near Kinigi for two nights.

Upper-midrange lodge options: Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge and Virunga Lodge are widely regarded as the best value mid-range gorilla-trekking lodges in the area, offering excellent food and comfortable accommodation, with Virunga Lodge in particular known for its views over Lake Bulera. Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is notable as Rwanda’s first community-owned lodge, built by Governors’ Camp Collection and managed by a local trust that channels lodge fees into conservation and community projects.

Day 5 – Gorilla Trekking, Volcanoes National Park

The highlight of the trip: a day spent tracking one of Volcanoes’ habituated gorilla families through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, followed by an hour in their company. In the afternoon, relax at the lodge, or add on a golden monkey trek if energy permits. Overnight as above.

Day 6 – Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda

Cross the Rwanda–Uganda border via the Cyanika crossing and continue to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (roughly 4–5 hours total, depending on route and border formalities). Bwindi is divided into four trekking sectors — Buhoma, Ruhija, Rushaga, and Nkuringo — and your gorilla permit determines which sector you’re based in, since lodging should match the trekking sector to avoid long drives before and after the trek. Settle in for two nights.

Upper-midrange lodge options: Buhoma Lodge is one of only two lodges located within the park itself, a short walk from the trekking meeting point, with an elevated central lounge, dining area, spa, and fireplaces for cool evenings. In the Rushaga sector, Ichumbi Gorilla Lodge sits on higher ground with wide views over the surrounding hills, offering a modern, elevated stay with clean, comfortable rooms. In Ruhija, Mahogany Springs is known for spacious suites with large terraces, floor-to-ceiling windows facing the forest, and a bar, lounge, and restaurant serving both local and international dishes.

Day 7 – Gorilla Trekking, Bwindi

A full day dedicated to trekking Bwindi’s gorilla families through dense, ancient rainforest — often steeper and denser terrain than Volcanoes, which is part of its appeal. Afternoon free to relax, walk community trails, or visit a local Batwa community. Overnight as above.

Day 8 – Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

Drive north (about 2–3 hours) into Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most visited savanna park, spanning open grassland, forest, papyrus swamp, and the shores of Lake Edward and the Kazinga Channel. Depending on your gorilla permit sector, you may route via the scenic Ishasha sector, famous for its tree-climbing lions. Arrive in time for an afternoon game drive.

Upper-midrange lodge options: Marafiki Safari Lodge is a well-regarded mid-range property with beautifully crafted, grass-thatched cottages and open-air showers for an immersive wilderness feel. Kasenyi Safari Camp sits right on the park boundary overlooking Bunyampaka Salt Lake, well positioned for game drives through the Kasenyi plains. For a touch more comfort, Katara Lodge offers upmarket cottages within the park’s heart.

Day 9 – Kazinga Channel Boat Cruise & Game Drives

Spend the morning on a game drive through the Kasenyi plains, tracking lion, elephant, buffalo, and the park’s abundant Ugandan kob. In the afternoon, take the classic Kazinga Channel boat cruise — one of Africa’s best wildlife-viewing boat trips, with hippos, buffalo, elephants, and prolific birdlife lining the banks. Overnight as above.

Day 10 – Ishasha Sector (optional) & Transfer to Lake Mburo National Park

Depending on your route, either detour through Ishasha to look for tree-climbing lions in the fig trees, or head directly south toward Lake Mburo National Park (roughly 4–5 hours from Mweya). Lake Mburo is Uganda’s smallest savanna park and a refreshing change of scenery — acacia woodland, rolling hills, and a park where you can walk and cycle among zebra, impala, eland, and giraffe due to the low predator density.

Upper-midrange lodge options: Mpogo Safari Lodge, a 16-room property on a hill on the park’s outskirts, offers comfortable mid-range accommodation with regular visits from zebras, buffaloes, antelope, and even hyenas drawn to a nearby salt lick. Rwakobo Rock Lodge, just outside the park, is another popular mid-range choice, built into a rocky outcrop with lovely sunset views. Arcadia Cottages Mburo offers upscale bandas with en-suite facilities and private terraces overlooking the savanna, with a lounge and boat trips available — a good step up if you want a bit more polish.

Day 11 – Game Drive, Boat Safari & Horseback Option, Lake Mburo

Enjoy an early morning game drive through Mburo’s rolling grassland, followed by a relaxed boat ride on the lake itself — one of the few places on this circuit where you can safely approach hippos and crocodiles from the water while spotting fish eagles overhead. In the afternoon, those craving something different can try a horseback safari (available through certain lodges), riding among zebra and antelope. Overnight as above.

Day 12 – Transfer to Entebbe & Departure

Depart Lake Mburo for the drive to Entebbe (approximately 4–5 hours), with Kampala’s outskirts along the way. Depending on flight timing, you might stop at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre (Entebbe Zoo) or the Botanical Gardens on the shores of Lake Victoria for a final relaxed look at Uganda’s wildlife and birdlife before your evening flight home.

Practical notes

• Permits: Gorilla trekking permits (Rwanda and Uganda) and chimp permits (Nyungwe) should be booked months in advance — they sell out in peak season (June–September, December–February) and dictate which sector/lodge you’ll be based in.
• Border crossing: The Cyanika (Rwanda–Uganda, near Volcanoes/Kisoro) crossing is straightforward but budget extra time for immigration formalities.
• Pacing: This itinerary is fairly active with two separate primate treks (gorillas twice, in effect, plus chimps) — if that feels like too much trekking, the Bwindi leg could be swapped for an extra Queen Elizabeth day instead.
• Lodge selection: Where I’ve named “upper-midrange,” expect comfortable en-suite cottages or tents, good food, and attentive service, generally in the $250–500 per person per night range full-board, sitting between backpacker-style camps and the ultra-luxury likes of Bisate or Singita.
