8-Day Rwanda Safari: Akagera, Nyungwe & Volcanoes National Park
This 8-day Rwanda safari covers the country’s three flagship parks: Akagera for Big Five game drives and boat safaris, Nyungwe for chimpanzee trekking and the canopy walkway, and Volcanoes National Park for the highlight—mountain gorilla trekking. It starts and ends in Kigali, with cultural stops and scenic drives through Rwanda’s “thousand hills” connecting each region, staying at upper-midrange lodges throughout.
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kigali
Land at Kigali International Airport, where your driver-guide meets you. Spend the afternoon settling in, and consider a short city tour: the Kigali Genocide Memorial (essential for understanding modern Rwanda), the bustling Kimironko Market, and Inema Arts Center for contemporary Rwandan art. Kigali is one of Africa’s cleanest and safest capitals, so an evening stroll or dinner out is easy and enjoyable.
Lodging (upper-midrange): Ubumwe Grande Hotel, Ilala Hotel, or Ndaba Hotel Kigali — all comfortable, well-located, with good restaurants and reliable Wi-Fi.
Day 2: Kigali to Akagera National Park
After breakfast, drive roughly 2.5–3 hours east to Akagera National Park, Rwanda’s only Big Five park, characterized by savanna, lakes, and papyrus swamps along the Tanzanian border. Arrive in time for a midday game drive or lunch at your lodge followed by an afternoon boat safari on Lake Ihema — excellent for hippos, crocodiles, and abundant birdlife including African fish eagles and kingfishers.
Lodging (upper-midrange): Ruzizi Tented Lodge (intimate, lake-facing tented camp inside the park, widely considered the best upper-midrange option in Akagera) or Karenge Bush Camp (seasonal, more rustic-luxury tented option with excellent game viewing from camp).
Day 3: Full Day in Akagera
Dedicate the full day to game drives. Akagera has rebounded remarkably since reintroduction programs brought back lions (2015) and black rhinos (2017), making it a genuine Big Five destination again. Head out early for a sunrise game drive when predators are most active, covering areas like Mutumba Hills for panoramic views and a good chance at giraffe, buffalo, zebra, elephant, and topi. Return for lunch, rest during the heat of the day, then head out again for a late-afternoon drive as animals become active near waterholes. A guided night drive (offered by some lodges) is worthwhile for leopard, hyena, and nocturnal species.

Day 4: Akagera to Nyungwe Forest National Park
This is a long transfer day — Akagera to Nyungwe is roughly 6–7 hours by road, crossing much of southern Rwanda through the country’s famous “thousand hills” scenery, tea plantations, and terraced farmland. Many itineraries break this journey in Huye (Butare) for lunch and a visit to the Ethnographic Museum, one of the best in the region for Rwandan cultural history. Alternatively, a domestic flight connection can shorten this leg considerably if time is tight — ask your operator about flights to Kamembe, which is close to Nyungwe.
Lodging (upper-midrange): Nyungwe Top View Hill Hotel (comfortable rooms with sweeping forest views, good value) or Gisakura Guest House (simple, well-located near the park’s western entrance). Travelers wanting a step up can consider One&Only Nyungwe House, though this sits at the true luxury end rather than midrange.
Day 5: Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe
Rise very early — chimp trekking departures typically start around 4:30–5:00 am, since chimpanzees move quickly once they leave their overnight nests. Nyungwe is one of the few places in Africa offering reliable chimpanzee tracking in high-altitude montane rainforest, and treks can range from an easy 30-minute walk to several hours depending on where the community has moved. After the trek, rest at the lodge, then in the afternoon walk the famous Canopy Walkway — a 160-meter suspended bridge threading through the forest canopy, offering superb views over the valley and a completely different perspective on the forest ecosystem. Nyungwe is also one of Africa’s premier birding destinations, with over 300 species recorded, so keen birders should build in extra time here.

Day 6: Nyungwe to Volcanoes National Park
Drive north to Musanze (Ruhengeri), gateway to Volcanoes National Park, roughly 4.5–5 hours depending on route and stops. The landscape changes dramatically as you approach the Virunga Mountains — five volcanic peaks straddling Rwanda, Uganda, and the DR Congo, several still active in the Congo side. Break the journey in Kigali if needed, or drive directly. On arrival in Musanze, settle into your lodge with views of the volcanoes and, time permitting, visit the Kinigi cultural village or simply rest ahead of the following day’s gorilla trek, which is physically demanding and requires an early start.
Lodging (upper-midrange): Mountain Gorilla View Lodge (solid mid-range choice with volcano views and comfortable cottages), Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge (good value, close to park headquarters), or Kinigi Guest House (community-run, simple but well-situated). For those wanting a slight splurge without going fully luxury, Virunga Lodge and Bisate Lodge exist but sit above true midrange pricing.
Day 7: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park
The highlight of the trip. Report to Kinigi Park Headquarters by 7:00 am for briefing and permit allocation — permits currently cost USD 1,500 per person and must be booked well in advance through Rwanda Development Board, ideally 6–12 months ahead given limited daily availability. Trekking to one of the habituated gorilla families can take anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours through bamboo forest and volcanic slopes, depending on where the group has settled, and altitude (the park sits between roughly 2,400 and 4,500 meters) makes the hike more strenuous than it looks on paper — a reasonable fitness level and trekking poles (often provided) help considerably. Once you locate the family, you get exactly one hour in their presence, observing silverbacks, mothers with infants, and juveniles at close range — an experience most visitors describe as genuinely emotional. Porters are available to hire locally and are well worth the modest fee, both for supporting the local community and for help on the steeper terrain.
In the afternoon, options include the Golden Monkey trek in the same park (a shorter, less strenuous outing to see the endangered and highly entertaining golden monkeys), a visit to the Dian Fossey grave site and former Karisoke Research Center (a demanding half-day hike), or simply resting after the morning’s exertion.

Day 8: Musanze to Kigali — Departure
Drive back to Kigali (roughly 2.5–3 hours), with time built in for last-minute shopping at Kigali’s craft markets or Caplaki Craft Village, and a final Rwandan coffee at one of Kigali’s excellent cafés — the country’s coffee culture has grown significantly in recent years. Transfer to Kigali International Airport for your onward flight.
Planning Notes
Permits and booking lead time: Gorilla permits (Volcanoes) and chimp permits (Nyungwe) should both be secured well ahead of travel, especially in peak season (June–September and December–February). Akagera does not require special permits beyond standard park entry fees.
Pacing alternative: Travelers with more flexibility sometimes add a rest day between Nyungwe and Volcanoes, or fly Kigali–Kamembe–Kigali to cut driving time and add an extra night in one of the parks instead.
